A big thank you to all of the 35,000 art lovers who came out in droves to enjoy seeing local artists creating their art, along Moss St. in Victoria. Thanks also to my great helpers Liz and Pat and to my host house, (the home I was positioned in front of). You were all so helpful and especially the homeowners on Moss, who came to rescue with first aid! It was such a fun day visiting with lots of friends and meeting new friends who enjoyed my art.

Whether looking North or looking South, the crowd was thick and very friendly and enthusiastic!

This year there was a record 200 artists gracing the street and demonstrating their art form! Every art form you can think of was represented on Moss St. this past Saturday.

TD Art Gallery Paint-In

I'm looking forward to the TD Art Gallery Paint-In this Saturday July 16th, from 11:00 - 4:00 on Moss St., in Victoria BC. Over 35,000 art lovers roam the street viewing 120 artists demonstrating their art forms en plein air. Wasn't that a party! Yesterday, Saturday July 19, was the 27th Annual TD Art Gallery Paint-In, the largest art event on Vancouver Island. What a blast we had!! There were 180 artists demonstrating their art forms in all different mediums and styles. As well 35,000 art enthusiasts came out to watch the creation of art and interact with the artists. Here I am painting my demo piece, a still life of cherries, painted from life. 

I had four wonderful volunteers who came to help me for the day and this is my friend Marilyn. I could not have done it without all your help. Thank you ladies!!

The Paint-In stretches from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria down 14 blocks to the water, with artists on both sides of the street all the way. It's the most incredible experience to see the sea of heads belonging to all the people of Victoria who love the arts!

And here is the celebration party in the garden of the Art Gallery at the end of the day. What a great way to end such a fabulous day. In the distance is a real party band with many dancers! It was a great time and I'm so happy to be living in a city that supports and loves the arts.

This is one of the new paintings that I will be presenting at the TD Art Gallery Paint-In (formerly known as the Moss St Paint-In) on Saturday July 20th, 11am - 4:30pm. I'm looking forward to being part of the Paint-In again this year and I will be located at 446 Moss St. at Thurlow St, across the street from the Moss St Market. You can shop for art and fresh farm veggies all in one go! How great is that?

For those of you unfamiliar with the Paint-In, it's a exciting day presenting all forms of visual art. Come on out with your family and friends and enjoy the fun! All of Moss Street from Fort St to Dallas Rd is closed to cars. The street will be lined on both sides with 150 artists who are bringing their studios to the street that day. Each year about 35,000 art enthusiasts come out to enjoy the event. This year my demonstration will be painting a still life from life. If you're at the event come by and say hi. I'd love to see you!

TD Art Gallery Paint In

L'Aperitif, is my Rainy Day Draw Prize at the TD Art Gallery Paint-In in Victoria BC, Saturday July 16th.


Saturday was the much awaited 24th Annual TD Art Gallery Paint-In (formerly known as the Moss Street Paint In). The whole week the weather had been very poor, but the Paint-In has an almost 100% record of sunshine, so we all had our fingers crossed. I awoke Saturday morning to torrential rain!! My husband and I loaded up the car with sheets of rain pouring down, set up a tent awning and managed to get all my paintings in underneath. Saturday Victoria experienced a record rainfall for that day, with 11.4 millimeters of rainfall, topping 7.1 mm in 1942! I thought that I might have a very lonely day freezing underneath my tent with just some paintings as company. But Victoria came through and the art lovers came in out in droves, with umbrellas in hand, and within a short time the rain let up, and the artists ventured out from undercover.




There were 150 artists, in all mediums from all varieties of painting to sculpture, pottery, fiber arts, and collage and more. There were many opportunities for participation, and kids had passports to try out an art form, get their passport stamped, then on to the next station. It turned out to be a wonderful day all round, and showed that if you live in the Pacific Northwest, a bit of rain never stops you! I met many enthusiastic art lovers and had some great conversations about my demo piece - painting a grisaille, what it's for and how it works. I also had a number of textured pieces on display and discussed texture as an added dimension, to enhance the composition, and create movement in the painting. Sorry I'm lacking photos of my set up. As a thank you to all the art lovers who came enthusiastically regardless of the rain, I had an impromptu Rainy Day Draw Prize and gave away a sunny still life painting depicting enjoying a glass of wine on a patio . The lucky winner was M. O'Neill! The TD Art Gallery Paint-In was great fun and I can hardly wait until next year!

Wild Flower Meadow

I've been wanting to try painting on a cradled wooden panel to see what it's like compared to painting on canvas or linen. So this was my first foray into painting on wood. As recommended, I sealed it with two coats of matte acrylic medium before starting to paint. There's definitely a learning curve here, because the paint goes on, (and comes off), differently for sure. It's quite a slick surface, so it doesn't stick that well, and can easily be removed by mistake if you don't use a light touch. I've got one more to experiment with, so I'll see how that one goes. I'd like to try building up texture before painting, and it would be interesting to see how acrylics go on as they dry so much more quickly. Have any of you painted on wood panels? Do you have any tips you'd like to share?



I actually really like this composition, and will probably repaint in on canvas. This is a walk my husband and I took recently in a nearby natural park. The park is full of protected plants and trees. The wildflowers are Fawn Lilies that are naturalized throughout the meadows, and the tree is a Garry Oak.



I'm really delighted to report that I've been juried into the TD Art Gallery Paint-In on July 16th. It's a wonderful summer art event which brings thousands of people together for one day, observing and talking with the artists at work. It's a really high energy and fun art celebration organized by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. If you happen to be coming to Victoria at that time, you'll definitely want to put this event on your agenda.
