Marrakech

Marrakech   Oil   8 x 10

Marrakech is another new piece being present at the TD Art Gallery Paint In in Victoria BC on July 20th. This piece came together after a visit to my favourite consignment store, where I found on one trip the brass coffee urn and on another the handwoven textile. I added the fruit and focused on softening edges to create some mystery to the piece.

A blogging friend Kathrine Thomas just posted about how paintings look in original form as opposed to photos and now also online. I can honestly say that this painting looks way better in the original form. I photographed it several times, but the figs kept coming out bright purple. They are darker and more subdued in person. Although I use Photoshop Elements  to crop and resize for the web, I don't know who to colour correct. I'm taking a workshop in the Fall on how to properly photograph paintings, and I'm really looking forward to it!

  1. Bonjour,
    Gros bisous

    1. Merci Martine! You are as gifted with words as you are with the paint brush.

  2. I like the subtle, dreamy colors in this painting and the way they reflect in the coffee urn. You arranged this so beautifully! Isn't it fun to bring home new treasures and work them into a painting? I'm glad you mentioned about the softened edges helping to give the piece a mysterious quality... that's something I need to think more about. You are so skilled at handling the softened edges in a way that makes them look natural and very effective. The gallery visitors are going to love this one. And I want to know all about the workshop! (Thanks for the mention today!)

    1. Thanks so much for very kind comment. I laughed when I read that you find me skilled in softening edges. I just took the workshop from Tanya Bone and I learned a lot about edges from her, but I'm just experimenting with it. I really appreciate your reaction to my first attempts!! You're welcome for the mention. I always find your posts so interesting. You really analyze all the steps of creating a piece, and then put it into words. They are always things we think about but don't necessarily voice, and to read everyone's responses as well is a great learning situation for all of us. Thank you Kathrine!

    1. Thank you Hilda! All these soft edges are new to me. It's a new direction I'm trying to take, so I'm really appreciative of the feedback. I just love patterned textiles, and trying to represent them in a simplified form but still having it read as the fabric. Cheers!
